The Onifaari Series 26: Abdul Ganiyu Fawehinmi Park, Ojota Lagos-State
What’s up, Lagos? Greetings from the soil’s daughter, and I hope you keep safe and take all necessary precautions for Covid-19.
Yesterday, I was at Ganiyu Fawehinmi park on a picnic date with my friends. The famous Ganiyu Fawehinmi Park was built by the former governor of Lagos state Akinwunmi Ambode in memory of the late human rights lawyer and hero.
Chief Abdul Ganiyu Fawehinmi (SAN) park is located at Emmanuel Street, Ojota, Lagos State, Nigeria.
The monument was unveiled on April 22, 2018, by the former Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode. And the statue was designed and erected by famous Sculptor, Olurotimi Ajayi.
Chief Abdul Ganiyu Fawehinmi (SAN) was born on April 22, 1938, and lived till September 5, 2009. He is a native of Ondo state, where he held the chieftaincy title of Lamofin of Ondo. Chief Fawehinmi was a relentless human and civil rights lawyer, tireless social critic, erudite scholar, and respected publisher of many inspirational books, all of which cemented his legendary status in Nigeria.
The park has many side attractions such as different kinds of swings, artificial horses, a beautiful lawn to have a picnic, and a right relaxation spot to gain sanity and escape the reality for few hours.
It is a stunning place to have pre-wedding pictures taken and serene enough for hangouts among friends like we did. I can’t guess the capacity of the park, but it is spacious enough.
There are benches to sit, but you can go along with your mat if you prefer sitting on the lush and well-trimmed green grasses. The park is well maintained and absolutely free, but you should go with spare change to settle the security men as per the Nigerian context.
Also, there are places that you can get things around as the park is close to the popular Ketu park, but that shouldn’t stop you from going with your food and other eatables for convenience.
There is no doubt Lagos state gives adequate attention to their tourist sites with how they maintain their edifices. It is indeed a center of excellence!
Thank you for reading my blog post always.
